The Most Important Skill For Successful Affiliate Marketing

We’ve been discussing the need for affiliates to build their opt-in lists, and talked about the fact that failing to do so is the main mistake made by affiliates. But to be successful as an affiliate, both for making money online and for building your opt-in list, one very important skill must be mastered - the most important skill for successful affiliate marketing.

In fact, this one skill is the main ingredient in the success of all online businesses, and the most important tool in your affiliate marketing skills toolbox: the ability to drive massive amounts of targeted traffic to your links! Whether you’re sending that targeted traffic to a free report on a butterfly-marketing type of site, a free download to entice them to join your list, to your blog in whatever niches you operate in or directly to your affiliate links, the number of targeted visitors you can mobilize quickly is going to be directly reflected in your affiliate commissions.

The good news is that many of the most powerful tools and techniques used by traffic masters are free, or require a very low investment - one that can often be made back on the first couple of affiliate promotions you do after including the new tool into your marketing mix, leaving you with pro tools with no net cost in short order.

The bad news (for some) is that it takes work - true effort - both to learn these various promotional techniques and to apply the tactics to any given affiliate opportunity. If you thought affiliate marketing was a way to make a lot of money online with little or no effort, you’re sadly mistaken and have probably been reading the salespages of online scammers, not professional super-affiliates. None of us got to where we are today without a lot of effort, even those who are able to outsource a fair bit of what they do - just learning what’s needed and how it must be done is necessary before you know what to outsource!

Now this doesn’t mean you’ll have to use every one of the traffic generation strategies in every affiliate marketing promotion you get involved in - far from it. Some techniques are short-term, bringing in targeted traffic almost immediately but then tapering off or stopping altogether, while others take time to build momentum, but can keep supplying visitors for weeks, months or even years. Tweets on Twitter are a good example of the former, while article marketing and video marketing are better examples of the latter.

So it stands to reason that if you’re promoting a 3-day sale, or even a week-long event, you’ll want to rely on your short-term, immediate-response tools. If you’re promoting a product or service that will be ongoing, especially one that pays residual commissions, you’ll want to use them all. Start with the techniques that bring instant traffic, then shift your focus to the mid- and long-term sources to ensure you continue to make money from your efforts for that opportunity. The higher your recurring commissions the less time you need to focus on making quick bucks, and the greater amount of your affiliate marketing activities that can be focused around list-building, pre-selling and getting involved in pre-launch joint-venture opportunities.

Start right now, today, and set the goal for yourself of learning as many different ways to drive targeted traffic as you can using both free and paid traffic sources. As your knowledge grows so should your ability to mobilize targeted visitors almost on demand, and that’s one of the biggest keys to achieving the super-affiliate status and big affiliate paydays you’re dreaming about now!

The Affiliate Marketing Formula That Works Best Right Now

Affiliate marketing, and in fact the Internet itself, is evolving daily - leaving it in a state of constant flux. So just how is an affiliate, especially one new to affiliate marketing who may still be working at a full-time job as well, supposed to keep up with it all?

First, of course, you should be re-investing in your online business, watching for new training resources from Super Affiliates that you’ve come to trust as providing good solid up-to-date affiliate marketing training materials. And in between, you should be subscribed to their e-zines (e-mail newsletters), visiting their blogs regularly, and following them at sites like MyBlogLog, Technorati and Twitter - especially Twitter since it’s always real-time.

How drastically does the affiliate marketing game change? Just a few years ago it was all safelists, free-for-all pages and traffic exchanges - now Web 2.0 techniques, like blogging and social networking are leaving the earlier strategies in the dust.

Let’s look at the components of recent successful strategies that have made affiliates the most in commissions and prizes and continue to be ultra-effective right now, shall we?

First, almost without exception Super-Affiliates have their own opt-in lists they e-mail offers to; lists tightly targeted to whatever niche they’re operating in. If, for example, they operate in the Internet marketing, travel and Forex niches, they’ll have separate lists targeted to each of those three niches.

And that’s a win-win for the super-affiliate - their lists drive traffic to each new affiliate promotion they attack, and each new promotion is used as another opportunity to build those lists even further. They’ll offer a free download or a free video as an incentive to get targeted people to join their list - that download or video is packed with value, but still functions mostly as a pre-sell vehicle for their current promotion.

So they’ve now gotten the new targeted prospects onto their list, and warmed them up to the subject, service, niche or person they’re currently promoting. A few e-mails later those new prospects will most likely follow an affiliate link to the site being promoted, thus raising sales even higher. The super-affiliate has added more targeted prospects to their opt-in lists by providing great free content upfront, and made more money on the promotion because of it.

On the biggest launches, especially launches for high-ticket items, competition among affiliates is much more excited - and while the tactic above is still employed very successfully, something more is needed to get onto the leaderboard and end up at or near the top of the heap. Once again the answer is providing additional value-added content of good use to your prospective buyers.

If you’re on the mailing list of many top Internet marketers, you’ve recently been deluged with e-mails every time a big new high-ticket launch is announced, especially if there’s a contest for the affiliates. Notice how many of them offer bigger and bigger bonuses if you buy the item through their link? They wouldn’t keep doing that if it didn’t work, but it does - big time!

Why is it so successful when it’s so transparent a ploy? Because the customer doesn’t care WHY the bonus is being offered, they just care that they’re getting the product they want to buy and a lot more helpful resources to go with it for no extra cost. This makes the purchase more valuable to them because it provides them with more of what they want and need - they could care less about your affiliate marketing commissions.

So when we boil it all down to basics, what’s working best in affiliate marketing right now is delivering value added reasons to buy through your link while using that extra content to build your targeted lists for future promotions. Since the business never stands still, not too far down the road that will be replaced by the next system, but for now this is where you want to focus your affiliate marketing efforts!

A lot of praise and testimonials have rolled in since the launch of my Advanced Twitter Marketing System, but not a lot has been said yet about using it for affiliate marketing. Yesterday we discussed the need for affiliates to be building opt-in lists for affiliate marketing success. As the next installment in the Captain Affiliate’s List-Building for Affiliates series, today I want to show you two powerful free list-building videos from my friend Socrates Socratous.

Every super-affiliate has a powerful opt-in list they can send their affiliate marketing promotions to. And every other affiliate wants to achieve that same level of affiliate marketing success. So it’s obvious that effective affiliate marketing has to include several successful list-building campaigns, preferably running simultaneously to ring forward the income horizon from your lists.

But full-time affiliate marketers are relatively rare - even most super-affiliates have their own products to market too, or are running membership sites or affiliate coaching and mentoring programs. Some of us are involved in all aspects of the above. And since affiliate marketing is the easiest and least expensive way of starting a business online, the bulk of all affiliate marketers are newbies - some of whom still aren’t even aware that building your targeted opt-in list is one of the cornerstones in the foundation of every successful affiliate marketing business. In an earlier post I refered to affiliates not building a list as The Biggest Affiliate Marketing Mistake Of All, and from the comments left by the affiliates who read the post you’ll see every one of the agrees.

There are a number of ways to build your opt-in list as an affiliate, and you should be using as many of them as your wallet and time availability will allow you to. That doesn’t mean go deep in debt to build your list - there’s no need to. Start with the free resources proven to build lists, then use the money as it comes in to try some of the more expensive methods - but keep your free list-building activities going on throughout, since there’s never a good reason to turn down free targeted traffic or free targeted opt-ins - even at the top of the affiliate marketing game, we still love them all!

Over the next few days the Captain is going to bring you a number of ways to build your affiliate lists, so be sure to bookmark this blog and return regularly, or better yet subscribe to the Captain Affiliate RSS feed if you have a feed reader you use. Some will be free methods, some will have a price attached - but all are tested and true methods of building your opt-in lists. Use as many of them as you can, and stay with them - you’ll see your lists growing daily and along with them, your affiliate marketing commissions.

For today, the Captain wants to point you to two necessary pieces of software - neither is free, but both are very reliable and powerful. First up is your professional autoresponders - the software that keeps track of the people on your list, and sends them your e-zine or e-course each time. Obviously you can’t send out 1,000, 10,000 or 100,000 e-mails in a day manually, so professional autoresponders are a must.

Your choice of autoresponders is critical - avoid the free services like the plague! Either they tack other people’s ads on top of your mailings, like the big places do with their free accounts, or they are small-fry who will eventually go broke and your list will disappear right along with their system. I recommend Hosting4Marketers.com, the service I use for over 80% of our daily mailing.

Why them? Because they’re the most reasonable of the pro services, and give the most bang for your buck. For about $20 a month you get hosting for up to a dozen small sites (You’ll see why you need this in future list-building posts), unlimited pro autoresponders, and even an affiliate program of your own should you decide to sell your own products later on. And your rate doesn’t rise as your list grows, like it does at the services that only give you the autoresponders.

The second piece of software you need is a way to capture subscribers when you send people to your affiliate links. Affiliate marketing on Twitter, or anywhere else for that matter, has certain techniques and tactics that make one more successful than other affiliates. For example, affiliates following the Advanced Twitter Marketing System are going to do better than those following common Twitter operating practices.

But what many people forget is that affiliate marketing, and all Internet marketing in general, is a business - and like any business, you’ll never get more out of it without putting more into it! Unsuccessful affiliates look to the super-affiliates and figure either they’re just lucky or they have some secret trick they use…

Well, truth is they do have a trick - but it’s no secret. It’s called hard work! Far too many would-be affiliates fail because they either don’t put in the effort it takes for successfull affiliate marketing, or they are putting in effort, but with no discipline to keep them on track and avoiding time-wasting and commission-shrinking activities.

Let me demonstrate a perfect example - the launch of the Advanced Twitter Marketing System. The product launched 1 week ago today, and 12 affiliates have sales there in that week. Mike Paetzold is in first place, followed closely by Joel Osborne - and they’re both far well ahead of the other 10 affiliates.

What type of extra effort does it take to lead in affiliate programs? Here’s what they did to pull out in front: Mike Paetzold held a teleseminar where he interviewed me about the Advanced Twitter Marketing System and then opened up the lines for a callers’ Q&A session, and made the replay available here. Joel Osborne recorded an interview on the subject and made it available here, then also recorded an affiliate video and put it online at YouTube. Each also created related bonuses to give away to those buying the Advanced Twitter Marketing System through their links.

The results speak for themselves - Mike and Joel pulled well ahead of the pack the very first week out of the starting gate, and created resources that will continue to build their response as time goes on. They used Twitter & their e-zines to get sales started immediately, followed up with their recordings for both instant and long-term sales and used blog posts the same way. As a result, they’ve made more affiliate commissions from the Advanced Twitter Marketing launch than any of the other affiliates. As I write this, both show up in the first 2 pages of results for Advanced Twitter Marketing on Google as well, meaning they’ll continue to draw targeted traffic - and additional profits - from the search engines as time goes on!

So the next time you see some super-affiliate buying another house, another sports car or another yacht, instead of being envious or figuring they’re just lucky, remember Mike and Joel - and how with not much extra effort they pulled ahead - just because they DID put that extra effort in. Advanced Twitter marketing is a very powerful affiliate marketing tool, and should be part of every professional affiliate marketer’s toolbox.

Let’s cut through all the cacaphony of amateur advice being flung around and zero in on professional marketing strategies that really do work and are being used by full-time professional online marketers every day to make hefty affiliate marketing commissions in the real world… What works right now!

We’ve talked about the need for every affiliate marketing practitioner, from newbie to super-affiliate, needing a blog for each niche they operate in. There’s no doubt about this one - from free targeted traffic from the search engines to effective pre-selling posts to list-building squeeze pages and opt-in forms, blogs are the most important tool for power affiliate marketing right now.

So while Twitter is the hottest Web 2.0 platform right now and has as many different uses as it has users, the biggest value advanced Twitter marketing has for affiliate marketing is as a targeted traffic magnet to drive your target audience to your affiliate marketing blogs.

Think about it for a minute - your blog has links to your affiliate promotions, general information for people interested in your niche (your targeted prospects), an opt-in form on each page, and probably links to one or more products or free gifts you offer, right? So if you’ve built a targeted folowing on Twitter, those people would want access to all of that too, right?

And even though we’re professional affiliate marketers, our own behaviour on Twitter gives us a strong hint in how to use the site as part of what we do… When you read through the Tweets of those you follow, which are you most likely to click on or retweet? A tweet that says ‘Buy this now…’ or one that says ‘New Blog Post: Why…’ Of course, it’s the second one, right? And your followers will behave just like you do in most cases…

So while there’s nothng wrong with sending the odd straight pitch to your Twitter followers, your most effective tweets will be announcing new blog posts and pointing people to info already on your blog. Blog posts like 27 Proven Ways To Increase Your Affiliate Marketing Commissions Now! or Affiliate Marketing Using Twitter - 7 Twitter Tips can be tweeted every few days for months. (Don’t be afraid to re-send tweets - your followers usually don’t see every tweet you send, and you gain new followers there pretty mch every day.)

Do you have blog posts that offer incentives to people who join your opt-in lists? Smart professional affiliates give away value-packed reports that include their affiliate links to related products, like those you can download free from Jeff Dedrick’s Viral E-Book Explosion. Brand the e-book with your affiliate link, put up the accompanying list-building squeeze page, then do a blog post offering your free download to your blog readers.

Then go back to Twitter and post a tweet like ‘FREE DOWNLOAD: Get your free (whatever) report today from (site)’ This a) gets people to your blog, b) gets more people onto your opt-in list, and c) gives your followers great content while also putting your affiliate links in front of them. If you’re smart you’ll also give them a copy of the squeeze page with your opt-in form removed, so they can give away your branded report to build their own lists. Not all will, but those who do will be putting your affiliate links in front of that many more people.

But don’t just barrage your followers with your own tweets - no matter how witty, funny or ’spay-shul’ you think you are, no one of us can be the complete answer for our target markets - and no one is an island, as the old saying goes. Just as your tweets help your followers, those YOU follow will post info helpful to you, too. Don’t be stingy - pass those tweets along to our people as well. Just be sure to do them as retweets - never steal another marketer’s tweets and claim them as your own.

One final tip from my upcoming Advanced Twitter Marketing System - don’t get addicted to Twitter. Yes, Twitter is a powerful affiliate marketing tool - but it’s JUST a tool. Just as you wouldn’t use a screwdriver to drive in a nail or a blowdryer to apply blush, each tool has it’s own usage. Give Twitter 10-15 minutes of your time every 3 or 4 hours, but then shut it back down and go on with your blogging, list-building, article marketing, video marketing and the rest of the activities involved in professional affiliate marketing. Twitter deserves to be added to your strategies, bt not at the expense of your other equally-effective marketing components.
